About
My MA research is an investigation of traditional storytelling and folklore told through the medium of textiles.
Tales from the Welsh Wood is a series of illustrative textile paintings which take their influence from storytelling in folklore and in particular the tradition of fairytales where stories were passed down through generations.
I grew up in the 60s and 70s in the South Wales Valleys in the “land of the twitching net curtains” where so much of family life was hidden from the neighbours.
I suffered a traumatic childhood and when the weather allowed I would escape from the adults to the outdoors, climb a tree and enter my imaginary world populated by animals, fairies and magical creatures. The Tales are a collection of modern fairytales based on my imaginary world and contain all the traditional elements associated with this type of story.Good overcomes evil and chaos and a young girl bravely triumphs over an evil enemy aided by the innocence of youth and a helpful dose of magic. The stories are fantasy, the characters based on my feelings about people and situations from my childhood.
I want to promote a temporary escape from the daily realities of living and present Flower Girl as a new heroine to those who have had or are still having difficult childhood experiences.
